OWNERS CORNER - April 25, 2016
It’s a sad and heartbreaking day when an owner has to punish two of his riders for violating a term of your agreement, but it is five times worse when one of those riders is your son. The life and opportunities we have given these kids is something of a dream compared to how most of us were raised and then to be slapped in the face by violating our trust and disregarding one of the most important terms of our agreement is mind blowing. The only reason both of these riders were not terminated from the Root River Racing team was because after evidence was found they admitted their wrong doing. For that they have received a 3 race suspension, requirement to continue training at or above the level of current training, to explain to each and every person on the team why they are suspended and to attend each of those races with enthusiasm and support of each and every rider on this team. I would like to say thank you to Rod Mickelson and Dee Manshack for helping make this decision and to everyone who came to me this past weekend at Muddy Creek and applauded our actions.

On a much lighter note, the team did very well at Muddy Creek taking home three 1st places and 5 podiums. Noah was the Super Star again this weekend pulling all four of his Holeshots and Moto wins in Open B and 450 B. Logan pulled off his second career ATV Nationals win by winning 450 C. The riders have been doing very well on Saturday but seem a little lethargic on Sunday so we are going to do something different Sunday morning at the next race to get them pumped up.

The team is very happy with Hoosier Tires that we are now running. Muddy Creek is known for loomy dirt and Tacky to blue groove clay. Hoosier Tires did a great job getting the tractions our riders needed to get to the podium. Another high light from the team to our sponsors so far this season is the ever changing and improving Motowoz shocks worked great in the rough conditions at Muddy Creek.

Have a good one and we’ll see you at Ironman,

Rich Gillette

At round 1 in Texas I raced pro sport and pro am. I got a 7th in pro sport Saturday and a 5th Sunday giving me a 6th overall. In pro am it was my first time doing a long times race like the one they do for that class. I got a good start and was running in third when I went to pass a guy and got knocked up onto a berm and stalled it. I got back going but I lost a lot of positions. I worked my way back up to 5th place but got tired at the end. In the second moto I got a horrible start and had to work my way up. I was pushing hard through the pack when I just couldn't hold on anymore. I got arm pump and could not ride to my ability. I ended up with a 10th that moto which gave me 11th overall. I am going to take what I learned about racing in the pro am class and use that to train for the second round in Tennessee.

OWNERS CORNER- 4/6/16
Well here we are again, the eve of the National ATV MX Championship series. Daytona was a great test for our riders. The team was very happy with our results and how the quads performed. I myself was exceptionally proud to see in what great condition the riders are in and how much their riding skills had advanced since Loretta's.

Our new look has already raised eyebrows at Honda in a positive way. I am anticipating to hear from them by the end of the season if our Pros do well this year. I truly hope Honda's replacement of the TRX450R is as good as the current model.

The off season at the Root River Racing shop went about as smooth as I could wish. Rebuilding 9 quads and building 6 new quads is always a huge challenge, but we were complete and ready to go 11 days before the Daytona ATV SX. Brad Booth has filled the spot Leon once had on a part time basis which really helped us meet our goals of being 100% complete prior to the season stating.

As I travel towards Texas, the closer I get to the Underground MX track my nerves are starting to build. There are many things I worry about once the race weekend starts for us. First of all is safety of my team traveling to the race. Once we get there, I stress about getting all 12 rigs through the gate and parked. Then it's practice and race days worries about if the machines are perfect and nothing is going to fail or hoping that none of the riders get hurt and wanting our rides to do well on meeting their goals and reaching the podium. It's a lot to take on and even after 9 years I still don't have it down to a science yet, but it sure is fun. I wish every rider out there a safe and successful 2016 season. Good luck and see you at the races.

Super stoked on my finishes at the daytona supercross! Managed to get 2nd in both heats, a 3rd overall, and a first overall main event win! Coming into this season I had a goal and told myself I would do whatever it takes to win. -- Tommy

2016 FORECAST
The winds of change are coming and we will be on top of the podium watching it all happen. The changes for the team that you will notice are more podium finishes, less crashes, riders coming and going from the team and the look of our quads .  To get our riders back to the podium, they all have changed up a lot of their routine and program. They have started working with new trainers, riding at different tracks and more focus on skills not just riding. We have already been seeing quite a bit of positive growth in the riders in this offseason. They have learned over this passed season, the stronger they are the less injuries they incur. Full team skill training will start once again at Splendora MX on December 26th. Currently the track is being prepared for a full redesign and increased skill level. Many of our riders will be staying at Splendor MX through out the offseason and traveling to other tracks to train with other riders as well.   Dalton “Bubba” Hicks is going to be a partial sponsored rider to pursue a career in the motorsports industry and will only be able to compete at a handful of nationals. Logan Tremellen, little brother to Dylan has been invite to become a full-time rider. Owen Subjek will also be a part-time rider instead of a full-time rider due to the amount of school absences require to run a full schedule of nationals.

A NEW LOOK FOR 2016

In 1986 was the birth of the Honda All Terrain Vehicle with the Fourtrax 250 R. In honor for the 30th anniversary of its birth, we will dress our quads with a similar color scheme and graphics package. We will be filling the white area with our sponsors.
2015 IN REVIEW
A few new faces for 2015. Pro rider Josh Upperman, B class rider Tyler Mack and 90’s class rider Owen Subjek bringing the full sponsored riders to a 12. Josh Upperman “Uppie” as he likes to be called came to us from Baldwin Motosport looking for a change. Minnesota native Tyler Mack joined the team after 10 years as a partial sponsored rider for Root River Racing. The extremely intelligent 8 year old Owen Subjek was thrown onto the team by Rich Gillette, because he saw a lot of talent in him even though he had very little experience.

The season for us started at Daytona International Speedway for the first ever ATV Supercross event on March 18th, 2015. With a full 4 months of R & D on our Pro Quad setup for Josh Upperman, we were happy with a 7th place finish from him. Knowing the adjustments and modifications of Josh’s quad was far from over, we knew it was going to be tough to get to the podium with him and his quad.  Through out the year we did get to a setup that Josh could run a very fast pace and be in the thick of it throughout the entire moto.

Crashes and injuries plagued us this year. Both Alex Gillette and Tommy Vossman Started the season with broken wrists and wouldn’t start their seasons until rounds 4th and 5th respectfully. Owen Subjek broke his femur playing with friends after practice at the 3rd round of racing. Noah Mickelson broke his hip at the 4th round and Logan Tremellen ruptured his large intestine in a crash at the 6th round.

The Team started giving back through one of our major sponsors Racing for Cancer. Through our win bonuses from Tom Vossman we contributed $12,300 dollars to the foundation. We also visited adolescent cancer hospitals at 6 of our events where Josh Upperman and 1 to 2 of our amateur riders would visit with patients and give them signed posters and other Root River Racing apparel.

Tough year for Root River Racing, but we pushed through to look forward to 2016. We still made it to the podium 44 times and more than half of our riders finished in the top 5 of their classes.
